Process:1. Transpiration is caused by evaporation and diffusion of water at leaves.
2. Evaporation creates a slight shortage of water in the leaf so more water is drawn from xylem to replace it.
3. this draws more water from roots, so there's constant transpiration of water through plant.
Explanation:
-water molecules will pull on each other up the xylem vessels as they are cohesive.
-water move through spongy mesophyll cells by osmosis and evaporate out of stomata.
-this creates a cycle (transpiration cycle)
Functions:
-constant transport of mineral ions
-providing water to keep cell turgid
-provide water for photosynthesis
-keep cool by evaporating and maintains optimum temperature to prevent enzymes from denaturing.
*Transpiration is a side effect of the way leaves are adapted for photosynthesis.
-they have stomata for gas exchange
-because there's more water in plant than the air outside, water escapes via diffusion.
