3.31 understand how random fertilisation produces genetic variation of offspring

Gametes (sex cells) contain a random selection of genetic information from each parent, the offspring will be a mix of different genotypes. Offspring will, therefore, be genetically different from their parents.

Because the gametes are produced from meiosis, the random fertilisation of an egg cell by a single sperm out of millions of sperm cells will also create genetic variation.

Genetic variation may also result from mutation, involving a change in DNA sequence to produce new alleles for a specific characteristic.
