3.26 understand how the sex of a person is controlled by one pair of chromosomes, XX in a female and XY in a male

There are 23 pairs of chromosomes in each diploid human cell, resulting in 46 individual chromosomes (sex cells only have 23 individual chromosomes as they are haploid).

The 23rd pair determines your gender: every male has "XY" as his 23rd pair and every female "XX" as their 23rd pair. Females only carry X alleles while males carry X and Y. this results in a 50/50 chance of being male or female.
