5.1 describe how glasshouses and polythene tunnels can be used to increase the yield of certain crops

Glasshouses: enclosed glass building used to grow plants

What are the benefits of growing plants in glasshouses?
- allows plants to be kept away from pests and diseases
- helps farmers control water supplied to their crops
- artificial light to give plants more time to photosynthesize
- trap the sun's heat to keep plants warm, which maintains optimum temperature for plant enzymes.
- farmers can use a paraffin heater to increase the level of carbon dioxide so plants photosynthesize more

Polythene tunnels: a tunnel that allows plants to be grown in an enclosed and protected environment.

What are the benefits of growing plants in polyethene tunnels?
- large scale polythene tunnels allow for farmers and machines to work inside, increasing crop yield.
- enclosed environment creates a warm climate closer to optimum temperature for plant enzymes.
